What is activated charcoal and why is it so trendy?

I know we like to follow trends and upload a cool photo to instagram, but we have to be careful what we eat. We can not put our health at risk by following a trend, such as using activated charcoal. I have been reading about this product that has been around for some time in the most trendy restaurants in the world. It is trendy because it is different from what we have always seen. Every time something causes us curiosity, it becomes more interesting.

What we need to know about activated charcoal

What is activated charcoal and why is it so trendy?

Activated charcoal

It is made of coconut or bamboo shells, exposed to very high temperatures as its name says, reaching a state of coal. It is called activated when mixed with food, giving a deep black tone to the most common foods such as ice cream, breads, drinks.

For me it is more the visual impact that has that of some specific flavor.

How does it work?

For many years it has been a key element at hospitals to treat patients with poisoning or overdose. Activated charcoal works as a very strong detox helping the body expel many unwanted or wanted nutrients. Yes, it purifies, absorbs and eliminates but it should be used moderately.

Precautions

According to doctors and nutritionists specialized in the subject, it’s okay if we eat a little bit of activated charcoal from time to time. The problem is in consuming it regularly, since it can have serious consequences.

As I mentioned before, it is a very strong detox, and it may expel nutrients that the body does need. It has also been said that it can interact with medications, expelling them from the body. That is why it is not recommended if we are taking any medication. Especially to regulate the tension or the pill.

On June 7 in New York, (thanks to the health department) the activated carbon in food was banned. The restaurants had to remove this ingredient from their dishes and completely discarded the activated charcoal.

Its consumption should be moderate, from time to time and in small quantities. There are more functions of this ingredient such as toothpaste, masks or beauty products.

In my opinion, I prefer activated carbon to come in this presentation and not in my food.
